Step Away From the Computer!

There is no denying that the rise of the computer along with the increasing availability of high speed Internet, has been one of the most significant impacts on our lives over the past decade or so. Technology has become both a blessing and a curse.  You  need it to run almost every aspect of our business, yet it can take over and take up so much of your time.

So just how can you manage your computer time?

Here are some of the effective ways I’ve found, and you can get even more when you become a member of the FBA Program.

  • Decide right now that you will no longer use your computer for mindless activities. There is no more “wasting time” on your computer. If you have a reason to be at the computer, be doing that item. Otherwise, step away from the computer.
  • Take a break ( for heaven’s sake) at regular intervals. You know how long is too long (perhaps an hour). Once you hit that point, go to an action item on your list that does not involve the computer to rest your body and your brain.
  • Stop any Internet use after a set time in the evening; it’s too stimulating and will keep you awake.
  • If you really can’t keep yourself away, unplug the computer during non-work hours to remove the temptation. It works surprisingly well.

What strategies do you use to manage your computer time? Leave a comment on the bottom of this entry.

I make every attempt to shut down around 5ish on Friday evening and not turn it on again until Monday – a 5 day a week work schedule. Sometimes I have an important deadline or project which means I have to work the weekend but I make a great effort to avoid such time crunches. Most of the time, I can control my schedule, although nothing is PERFECT.

    Hi,
How about using a software timer or something to let you know when you have spent lets say one hour on the computer. If the software was smart enough to know what you were doing it could allow so much time for email and another amount of time for Quick Books etc. Does anyone know of any good software like this?

Diane – great job with setting time limits on the computer

Richard – There is a Firefox add-on that will block you from specific websites during certain hours or for a set amount of time. It works pretty spiffy. You can find LeechBlock at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4476.
